The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired forward Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets in a blockbuster three-team deal.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are acquiring forward Peyton Watson in a three-team deal with the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers.

Watson is inking a four-year, $88 million deal with the Cavs with a player option and a trade kicker. He will become a key starting forward for Cleveland alongside James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen.

Watson is coming off a career year, averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game, shooting 49.1 percent from the field and 41.1 percent from three.

The 23-year-old is an athletic wing who has continued to improve as a shooter and will also provide solid defense for the Cavs.

In the deal, Cleveland is giving up sharpshooter Max Strus to the Clippers and a 2031 unprotected first-round pick and a 2032 Kings second-round pick to the Nuggets. Although the deal cost the Cavs a quality shooter in Strus and draft capital, Watson is a young wing who should be a great fit in their starting lineup.

Cleveland set up this deal last week, trading Dennis Schroder to the Charlotte Hornets, which created the cap flexibility to pull off a sign-and-trade for Watson.

The Cavs needed to take a big swing to acquire a talented forward like Watson as other teams in the Eastern Conference have improved drastically.

The Philadelphia 76ers were able to land Jaylen Brown and LeBron James while the Miami Heat acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the Toronto Raptors are reuniting with Kawhi Leonard (pending the NBA's investigation into the Clippers).

Cleveland made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2025-26 season, but were swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks. With the East getting tougher, it was pivotal for Koby Altman and the front office to make significant changes.

The Cavs did just that and have now bridged the gap with the addition of Watson and will need to officially re-sign Harden to create what should be one of the best starting lineups in the NBA in the 2026-27 season.
