The Cleveland Cavaliers have had their fair share of injuries this season, and that has affected the big-man room multiple times. Whether it was Jarrett Allen dealing with two separate finger injuries or Evan Mobley handling a nagging left calf, the wine and gold have needed help at the 5 at different points of the campaign.
That's where Thomas Bryant has stepped in and stepped up. This year, although with inconsistent minutes, Cleveland has been able to depend on him to bring a hulking presence to the paint, box out opponents on the interior, and step out to hit threes after setting screens.
In the latest episode of Courtside with Cavs, Spencer German and I shared our thoughts on Bryant being a critical part of the Cavs' bench and how he affects the game when he touches the floor:
"He can finish some alley-oops here and there, be around the rim, but Kenny [Atkinson] really likes the way that he's popping. He had a four-point play [on Tuesday] in the corner. He shot multiple from the corner. His three-point percentage is [improving at 34.0%]. That's why you brought him here, because he's able to stretch the floor in a way that maybe some of your other bigs can't.
"He's also bringing that size, that ability to crash the glass, to set some really hard screens. Thomas brings that element to this team, and they've not had a third big like this, who you can probably depend on in the playoffs, probably in a few years. He's got a different type of energy and brute strength."
The Cavs have the next three days off for rest and practice before hosting the Boston Celtics in a highly anticipated matinee affair at Rocket Arena. Cleveland will welcome the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, on the second night of a back-to-back, then hit the road to face the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.
