The Cleveland Cavaliers have not been the picture of health in this campaign, and Evan Mobley has had to deal with that misfortune. This year, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and 2024-25 Second Team All-NBA member has missed 15 games due to a bothersome left calf, making it difficult for him to find a consistent rhythm.
His particular ailment is nothing to mess with, and it's been smart on the Cavs' part to handle it with extra caution. However, with Jarrett Allen performing the way he was and the organization shifting the calculus at the league's trade deadline, it has challenged Mobley to both return to form physically and mentally adjust to new teammates.
Judging by the last handful of games, the 24-year-old is finding his sweet spots again. He shone against the Detroit Pistons on the road and at home, and that was amid uneven roles on the offensive end of the floor because of Cleveland's setbacks.
In an episode of Courtside with Cavs, Spencer German and I discussed the specific signs that show Mobley is feeling comfortable:
"He's been back only for a few games now, but I think Friday in Detroit and [Tuesday] against Detroit, it's as good as he's looked since coming back from that calf injury. Fluidly moving. The way that he's getting to his spots. Going right to left is one of his best traits; you can't stop him even if you're trying to shade him the other way because he's got that little crossover move.
"We know how good he is defensively, but when he's moving the way that he was [Tuesday], and he's catching the ball on the move and getting momentum toward the basket, that's big time. The good news on his shot is that he's starting to miss back iron now instead of front iron, which means that his legs are getting back under him, and he's been able to get lift -- not only on his jump shots, but when he's striding."
The Cavs returned to practice on Friday and have the next two days off to rest and recover before hosting the Boston Celtics in a highly anticipated matinee affair at Rocket Arena.
Cleveland will welcome the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, on the second night of a back-to-back, then hit the road to face the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.
