Just days after the Cleveland Cavaliers made a big move on the trade market, the Miami Heat are set to bring in another big name as well.

Just two days ago, it was the Cleveland Cavaliers making a big move on the trade market.

And on Friday, the Miami Heat are making a big move as well, bringing in veteran guard Klay Thompson, who most recently played with the Dallas Mavericks.

As reported by Shams Charania of ESPN, the Mavericks and Thompson reached agreement on a buyout deal. Miami will bring him in once he clears waivers.

We knew this was possible for weeks, as it was reported at the end of July that Miami was monitoring the market for Thompson.

Now, it's set to happen, and Thompson will pair with Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo, making the Heat even more formidable in the burgeoning Eastern Conference.

And all of this makes life harder for the Boston Celtics, who finished 56-26 last season, earning the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. But things appear much tougher this season, with the Detroit Pistons getting better as Cade Cunningham grows, the Philadelphia 76ers, Cavaliers and Heat making big moves, and the New York Knicks still returning as the reigning NBA champions.

About Thompson

At 36 years old, Thompson is no longer the player he was with the Golden State Warriors, but he's still a player that can help a very good team.

A 13-year veteran of the Warriors and Mavericks, he's a five-time All-Star, a two-time All-NBA selection and a four-time NBA champion. He was also an All-Defensive team member in 2018-19. For his career, he's averaged 18.6 ppg while shooting 40.9 percent from three-point range.

Last season, he averaged 11.7 ppg in 69 games for Dallas, shooting 39.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Again, he's not the player he was, but he's still plenty capable of creating an impact for Miami, which will cause issues for Boston.

Notes on Celtics-Heat

The two teams are set to play each other multiple times in 2026-27, but no matchup will be higher profile than the one that's set to take place on Christmas Day.

That game will occur in Boston, and Antetokounmpo has already added a little spice to it with his recent comments - and that's before the Thompson move.

Also in the news for Boston

Speaking on Tuesday morning's "The Greg Hill Show," Celtics owner Bill Chisholm spoke about the trade of Jaylen Brown, saying that he needed to be convinced of the move. He added that it is hard to separate the ownership portion of his life from the "fan" portion of his life, and he also said that he was certainly worried about what fans would think of the move, at least to a degree. But he trusts his front office and trusts their conviction in the move, and he says that we'll now see how it all ultimately plays out.
