As recently as Tuesday, it sounded as if Boston Celtics' second-round draft pick Dillon Mitchell could reject a contract from the C's and return to St. John's for a fifth year of college under a new preliminary injunction that is set to grant a fifth year to seniors who graduated college in 2026.

However, on Wednesday night, the Celtics signed Mitchell to a two-way deal, seemingly ending the idea of him returning to college. He'll now work on his development in the professional ranks and will likely shuttle back-and-forth between Boston and the G-League affiliate in Maine.

While Hugo Gonzalez played in 74 games as a rookie, rookies have had a hard time finding minutes for the Celtics over the last several years, so it's unclear exactly what his path to playing time in the NBA is. But regardless, he's an interesting developmental project for Boston.

Listed at 6-foot-8, Mitchell spent two years playing at Texas, one at Cincinnati and another at St. John's, helping the Red Storm earn a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament last season. They also won the Big East championship in both the regular season and postseason, beating UConn.

Mitchell is long and athletic, and is certainly capable of defending on the perimeter and aiding in the team's rebounding efforts. Boston has been so dependent on the 3-point shot for the last few years, that Mitchell seems to be part of a possible philosophical shift. He was only a 19 percent three-point shooter during his college career.

In addition to Mitchell, the Celtics took center Chris Cenac Jr. in the draft. He was selected in the first round at pick No. 27 out of Houston. He could also see time in the G-League, but that's unclear at this point.

The Celtics won't report to training camp until September and the preseason begins in early October.

The Celtics vaunted 'Big 3' of Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce will be together again, as the trio will present former head coach Doc Rivers at his Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement on Aug. 15.

We already knew that Garnett and Pierce were presenting Rivers, but Allen's addition was confirmed by Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe on Monday.

That news is certainly significant, considering the trio had a famous falling out over the breakup of the 'Big 3.' Allen left the team in free agency after the 2011-12 season, signing with the Miami Heat - who were rivals of the Celtics at the time. Allen, for his part, never believes a beef existed, but Garnett seems to very much held a grudge over the whole thing.
