Devin Carter was signed to a two-way deal on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Boston Celtics announced they had signed former NBA Draft lottery pick Devin Carter to a two-way deal, the final two-way deal for the team coming out of the preseason.
On Sunday, we learned that Carter could miss a few more weeks with mononucleosis. Carter only played in one preseason game, missing the other three with illness. Now, we know what the illness was.
By nature of the contract he signed, Carter could spend significant time in the G-League this season, and that season doesn't start until early November, so he has more time to get right in order to be ready for play in Maine.
But still, it's a disappointing setback for a player who is hoping to get a regular NBA opportunity again. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla spoke on Sunday afternoon about his staying in the organization and his performance in training camp.
Still just 24 years old, Carter played his college basketball at South Carolina and Providence. A Florida native, he played his high school basketball in New Hampshire, so he certainly has familiarity with New England, which gives him just a slight edge heading into this season.
Listed at 6-foot-2, he was the No. 13 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Providence. He's played in 74 games for the Sacramento Kings over the last two years, starting 12 of them. He had been traded to Atlanta earlier this offseason, but they waived him and made him a free agent. That's when the Celtics stepped in to pick him up.
Boston Celtics guard Devin Carter (99) backpedals after a three point basket during the first half of a preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Arena. David Dermer-Imagn ImagesCarter averaged 8.9 ppg a year ago while shooting 41.4 percent from the floor. He actually shot greater than 50 percent from two-point range, but he was just 26.3 percent from 3-point range. Of course, the Celtics shoot some of the highest volume of 3-pointers in the league, so if he's truly going to fit in with Boston's system, he'll have to improve that.
Of course, the Celtics have been very solid at player development over the last decade, and Payton Pritchard, Baylor Scheierman and Jordan Walsh are just recent proof of that. That bodes well for Carter as he looks to improve himself.

The Celtics will be off for two days before opening up the 2026-27 regular season on Tuesday afternoon (3 p.m. ET) against the Detroit Pistons. Detroit earned the No. 1 seed in last year's playoffs while Boston was 56-26 and got the No. 2.
