Young was talking about the perception of his game on a recent podcast, and Brown chimed in after the fact on social media.
Trae Young, the former No. 5 pick in the NBA Draft, is still just 27 years old. In eight years with the Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards, Young is already a four-time All-Star, an All-Rookie selection, an All-NBA selection and an assist champion.
But despite his impressive resume, there are still questions about the guard, who was injured most of this past season - and was traded from Atlanta to Washington.
Speaking on a recent episode of "The Pivot," Young said that he's being slept on by people on the outside. He also said "Imagine the Wizards being the No. 1 team in the East next year. What are people going to be saying?"
Well, Boston Celtics All-NBA selection Jaylen Brown weighed in on social media, simply saying "They gon move the bar," meaning that no matter what Young accomplishes or does, the expectations will always be raised to a point where they are largely unreachable.
The perception of Young
Before we get to Brown's comment, let's just address this:
1) Young played 15 games last season between the Hawks and Wizards. His being "slept on" is less a result of people viewing him negatively than it is simply about him being "out of sight, out of mind."
2) Second off, Young now plays for the Wizards, a team that hasn't been to the playoffs since 2020-21 and has posted eight consecutive losing seasons. The entire franchise is being slept on at the moment because it's been largely irrelevant for almost a decade. The hope is that Young, Anthony Davis and the No. 1 pick in the draft can help revitalize it.
3) Young is obviously a good player, and he helped take the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2020-21, but the Hawks regressed each subsequent year with him as the driver of the organization. Fair or not, he is not seen as a winning player at this time. He's seen as a stat compiler, getting the same treatment as guys like Carmelo Anthony and James Harden.
4) Finally, the Hawks traded Luka Doncic for Young on draft night. Young is always going to be compared to Doncic, and given the international star that he has become, Young will always (likely) continue to fall short, which affects his perception as well.

Never afraid to speak his mind, Brown is also never afraid to play the underdog card. Brown has made a great career out of beating back slights, either real or perceived. Even recently, he made it known that he doesn't think people like him.
While Brown clearly wants to be viewed in the same way that someone like Doncic or Jayson Tatum are, he seems to enjoy a "villain" role, again, perceived or real. It seems like he thinks that some people getting easier treatment from the fans and media, and others are forced to deal with a reality where what they do is never enough.
