Alright, this is the surprising Boston Celtics story that keeps on giving.
Let's take it bit-by-bit, shall we?
1) Women's basketball star Caitlin Clark appeared on Sunday night's NBC basketball coverage alongside host Maria Taylor and Hall of Famers Carmelo Anthony and Reggie Miller.
2) Taylor asked the two men which player Clark reminded them of.
3) Miller said that Clark reminded him of Celtics guard Payton Pritchard.
"I like Payton Pritchard from Boston, the way he's able to handle the basketball. He makes big shots when the shot clock is running down, a lot like this young lady right here. Isn't afraid of the big moment and is a champion like she's soon to be."
4) It was a somewhat jarring comparison considering that Payton is not seen as the best player on his own team, while Clark is seen as the face of the entire WNBA. Several places on the internet felt that Clark was offended by the comparison, including 'Awful Announcing.' We never did, which we explained here.
5) Anthony compared Clark's game to Luka Doncic, which makes sense considering how dynamic each are as a scorer.
6) When Pritchard hit a buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter on Tuesday night against the Dallas Mavericks, Clark had a little fun with the comparison on social media.
Sandwiched in between Nos 5 and 6 is former Celtics guard Paul Pierce, a basketball Hall of Famer, mocking Miller's comparison of Clark to Pritchard.
“Like she had the look of like Bro, I was thinking more Steph Curry...Her skillset and her magnetic pull...They’re not doubling him everywhere, face guarding denying him, like they do her like they do Steph. Did you see her in the USA game in the Olympic game where they were like deny they’re picking her up full?.. He doesn’t lead the team in scoring...I love Payton that’s my little brother. Her gravitational pull is on the same level as Steph’s in the WNBA.”
There's only one problem. Clark was famously left off the 2024 Olympic team in Paris, so, no, she wasn't getting doubled in the Olympics. Team USA won the gold medal, but Clark wasn't a part of it.
She likely will be in 2028 when the Olympics return to US soil in Los Angeles.
As for Pierce, his Hall of Fame resume of 10 All-Star Games, four All-NBA selections, a Finals win, and a Finals MVP win speak for themselves. But in this case, he simply has his facts wrong...
