Paul George had a big game in Game 1 and Jayson Tatum had a big game in Game 2, but the C's need more than just "one guy going off."
I'm not into big, overwhelming hot takes when it comes to the Boston Celtics.
The team has played two games so far. The team is 1-1. There are areas of strengths and there are areas in need of improvement. And no, nobody needs to be pressing any panic buttons.
That said, I have, what I think, is a clear and simple observation through two games.
The Celtics need more scoring depth
In Game 1 of the season, a loss to the Detroit Pistons, the Celtics got 38 points from Paul George and 13 from Jayson Tatum, 51 combined.
In Game 2 of the season, a win against the New York Knicks, the Celtics got 36 points from Tatum and 15 from George, so 51 combined.
Fifty-one combined points between the two of them is a very solid number, regardless of how you get there, although you'd like to see it come from a place of more balance. For instance, Tatum getting 28 and George getting 23 would be better, but let's not quibble too much here.
What is clear is that the Celtics have relied on "one player to go off" in each of the first two games, and that's not really a sustainable offensive plan. You can't just wait for one guy to have a big game. You need depth and balance, and that's why I'm looking at the secondary scorers to help provide it.
Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard (11) dribbles defended by Detroit Pistons guard Daniss Jenkins (24) in the second half at Little Caesars Arena. Rick Osentoski-Imagn ImagesFor instance, Payton Pritchard had just four points against the Knicks in 30 minutes. That's not enough. Sam Hauser had just six. Mitchell Robinson had just four.
The Celtics had four players in double-figures, but they really do rely on the likes of Pritchard and Derrick White to score in bunches, and it just didn't happen on Friday.
I'm convinced that it will, because Pritchard is too talented for it to not, but the Celtics will be better off the sooner it happens. He averaged 17 ppg last season and he's the most likely source of additional offense on the roster.
Up next
The Celtics will be back in action on Monday night against the Chicago Bulls in Boston. The tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Bulls are also 1-1 on the season and are coming off their first win of the campaign, a 132-125 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday afternoon.
That game was played in the afternoon to accommodate the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the World Series.
