Maxx Crosby, one of the best players in the NFL, paid homage to the Boston Celtics legend.
Las Vegas Raiders star defensive lineman Maxx Crosby paid homage to Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird on Sunday morning, walking into Gillette Stadium in a Bird jersey before an AFC matchup with the New England Patriots.
Mike Reiss of ESPN had the video.
I won't pretend to know if Crosby does this in every city he plays in, but he certainly knew that he was going to New England when he made this jersey choice, and it was clearly intentional. And understandably so since Bird is one of the greatest players in NBA history.
A 13-year veteran of the Celtics, Bird played his college ball at Indiana State. The No. 6 overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft, he was a 12-time All-Star, a 10-time All-NBA selection, a 3-time MVP, a 3-time NBA Champion, a 3-time All-Defensive Team selection and the Rookie of the Year in 1979-80. He was twice named the MVP of the NBA Finals. He averaged 24.3 ppg for his career to go along with 10.0 rebounds. An excellent three-point shooter, he shot 37.6 percent from 3-point range for his career.
His rivalry with Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers is one of the greatest rivalries in NBA history.
The Patriots and Raiders play at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Raiders are 3-1 while the Patriots are 2-2.
Elsewhere in the news for the Celtics
--Boston was in action again on Saturday night in the preseason, defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 144-106 at TD Garden. The Celtics played their starters and the 76ers didn't, so the end result is likely a little skewed, but it was still an excellent performance from Boston, which got 25 points from Payton Pritchard and 23 points from Jayson Tatum.
We gave our full takeaways here, but there was a lot to like from Pritchard, Tatum, Neemias Queta and Mitchell Robinson. Paul George struggled in his debut, going 3-of-10 from the floor.
--Former Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon, who won 6th Man of the Year in the NBA in 2022-23, was honored at the University of Virginia on Saturday night. He is now a member of the UVA basketball staff.
--The Celtics will play two more games this week: At home against the Hornets on Wednesday is up first. This is all in preparation of the regular season opener, which is Oct. 20 against the Detroit Pistons in Detroit. The Pistons were the No. 1 seed last year.
