The Celtics lost to the Detroit Pistons 121-113 on Opening Day.
The Boston Celtics suffered a very disappointing 121-113 loss on Opening Day against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday.
The Celtics were also on the unfortunate side of history in this one, blowing a 22-point lead in the third quarter thanks to a 23-0 Pistons run in the fourth.
The Celtics are now 0-1 and will go back to the drawing board in terms of how to hold a big lead. While there was the obvious negative in this loss, there were some big positives as well, including the debut performance of forward Paul George.
George, acquired this offseason from the Philadelphia 76ers, scored 38 points on 12-of-21 shooting. He was 7-of-12 from 3-point range and 7-of-8 at the foul line. He also registered five rebounds, three assists and an impressive five steals.
As noted by Celtics Stats, George's 38 points are the most ever by a Celtics player in his debut. The previous record was 30 from Kristaps Porzingis and George had eclipsed that in just the third quarter.
Boston Celtics forward Paul George (13) dribbles in the second half against the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena. Rick Osentoski-Imagn ImagesNow in his 17th year with the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, 76ers and Celtics, George has averaged 20.5 ppg for his career. He's a nine-time All-Star, a six-time All-NBA selection, a four-time All-Defensive Member and he's also won the steals crown before (2018-19).
While many fans were disappointed to see the team trade Jaylen Brown this offseason, it's obvious that George can help this team in a lot of ways. However, he shouldn't be counted on to score 38 points every night. He'll need more help from his supporting cast, including Jayson Tatum, who was just 6-of-23 from the floor for 13 points. The big man trio of Mitchell Robinson, Neemias Queta and Luka Garza also only had nine points in total.

Boston is back in action on Friday night against the defending NBA champion New York Knicks, who opened their season on Tuesday with a 106-100 loss against the 76ers. Jalen Brunson led the way with 21 points while Karl Anthony-Towns had 19. They also got 14 from Josh Hart.
New York defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
Robinson was a part of that Knicks team, so he'll look to make a bigger impact against his old teammates. He signed a three-year deal with Boston over the offseason. That deal is worth nearly $50 million.
Tip-off is 7 p.m. ET in Boston at TD Garden.
