After getting eliminated in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, there's no real answer to this question.

After going 56-26 in the regular season, the Boston Celtics were eliminated in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, clearly signaling a disappointing end to a great season.

With Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown still in their primes, there's clearly an urgency to win a title in Boston, and this offseason will be pivotal in trying to achieve that for the second time four years (2023-24).

The Celtics have spent a bunch of money over the last several years on Tatum and Brown's extensions, as well as Derrick White, so they'll have to be creative if they want to make any big splashes.

Ignoring the money for the moment, what are the biggest needs for the Celtics this offseason, either in free agency or the draft?

Let's dive in:

A big man

Luka Garza did an excellent job in 2025-26, even making some unique history, but he's not a traditional big man and he's not a big man that plays every game. It's for this reason that you hear the Celtics connected so heavily to Giannis Antetokounmpo on the trade market.

A consistent big man would allow the Celtics to get better at the rim, a stated goal of theirs, while also helping the C's on the rebounding side of things. Furthermore, if the big man were dynamic enough, he'd be able to draw some help, which would allow the post player to kick out to some wide open shooters.

We examined a look at St. John's big man Zuby Ejiofor on Saturday. The Celtics are reportedly bringing him in for a pre-draft workout. The draft begins on June 23.

Another point guard

Tatum and Brown both play with the ball in their hands a lot, as does White, but Payton Pritchard was excellent in his role as the primary ballhandler. However, Boston could stand another point guard to take some pressure off him. They don't necessarily have to score like Pritchard does, but can they help facilitate offense and get the ball in the hands of Tatum and Brown consistently?

Additional shooting help

Yes, the Celtics have said they want to get better on the interior, but if they do, they need players to knock down shots on the outside. White and Sam Hauser both struggled at times this season, and Boston could use more knock down shooters if they are going to play this inside-out game on offense.
