Carmelo Anthony believes Chris Paul should leave a potential jersey retirement to the Clippers, with his impact extending beyond championships.
Carmelo Anthony has a straightforward message for Chris Paul as the discussion over whether the Los Angeles Clippers should retire his jersey continues: Leave the decision to the organization.
Speaking on his “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, Anthony urged Paul to avoid dwelling on an honor that ultimately rests with the franchise.
“Let them sweat on it. Let them decide that. Let them figure that out,” Anthony said on 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast.
Anthony’s broader point concerned how teams evaluate a player’s legacy. He emphasized that jersey retirement involves more than victories and championships, with relationships inside an organization and contributions to its community also deserving consideration.
That is a useful way to approach Paul’s case. A franchise can recognize a player for helping change its identity, even when his tenure does not end with the achievement every team pursues.
Paul’s Impact Deserves a Broader Discussion
Paul’s first Clippers tenure helped establish the Lob City era alongside Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. The team became a regular playoff participant, with Paul directing an offense that gave the franchise a recognizable style.
For supporters of retiring his number, that transformation is central to the argument. A jersey in the rafters can commemorate an era and the player who helped define it.
Championships provide an obvious standard because they represent a franchise’s highest achievement. But relying on that standard alone leaves little room to acknowledge players who changed expectations without winning a title.
The Clippers can evaluate Paul’s place in their history by asking what the organization looked like before his arrival, what it became during his tenure and how supporters remember those seasons.
That does not require treating every successful player as a future jersey retirement candidate. It requires weighing the importance of a particular player to a particular franchise.
Paul’s case should be considered on those terms.
Anthony Puts the Decision on the Clippers
Anthony’s advice also recognizes the limits of what a player can control. Paul can explain what his Clippers years meant to him, but he cannot decide how the franchise formally recognizes them.
Continuing to debate the outcome would not necessarily bring him closer to an answer. The organization has to establish its own standards and determine whether his contributions meet them.
For the Clippers, the decision would communicate something about which chapters of their history they value. Retiring Paul’s number would recognize his role in an influential stretch of franchise basketball.
Anthony’s comments should not be mistaken for an announcement about the team’s plans. They are advice to Paul about handling the uncertainty surrounding a possible honor.
His position is reasonable: Paul’s accomplishments remain part of Clippers history regardless of when the organization makes a decision.
The franchise can take responsibility for the ceremony. Paul does not need to spend his time campaigning for it.
