Memphis may not be ready to contend yet, but its size, lineup flexibility, and positionless young core could make the Grizzlies surprisingly competitive.

The Memphis Grizzlies have a lot of young talent, but it's hard to set high expectations for a young team in a brutal Western Conference. If they are able to make a playoff push, their versatility will be their secret weapon.

It's a trend that many NBA teams have embraced. Being able to put a wide range of lineups on the floor is essential in 2026. That said, not every team has the roster to do it as well as others.

Memphis Can Win With Size

So will rostering the biggest man in the NBA. Zach Edey is listed at 7-foot-3 and 305 pounds by the NBA. When Edey is at the 5, Memphis will be able to outmuscle opponents.

Why not line Isaiah Stewart up with him at the 4? If Memphis really wants to get crazy, it could bolster those lineups with Cameron Boozer at the 3, Cedric Coward at the 2, and Ty Jerome at the 1.

Those lineups would have a size advantage at every position.

Speaking of Coward, he can also play the 3 when Memphis wants to outrun opponents. Jaylen Wells could join him at the 4, or Jerami Grant could do the same.

Starting to see the trend?

Grizzlies' Versatility Could Be a Calling Card

There are very few players in this rotation who can only play one position. Edey is obviously a pure 5, and it would be hard to play Javon Small anywhere but the 1.

That's about it.

We haven't even touched on Cam Spencer, Karim López, or Olivier-Maxence Prosper. The NBA lists Coward as a guard, Boozer and López as forwards, Stewart as a forward-center, and Prosper as a forward, illustrating how many different lineup combinations Memphis can reasonably experiment with.

The Grizzlies have one of the most versatile rosters in the NBA.

Versatility Won't Fix Everything Yet

That alone does not guarantee them success. Ultimately, Memphis will struggle against less versatile teams that simply have more NBA-ready talent.

Their versatility won't make them a title contender in 2026, but it could in a few years. For now, it could make them a sneakily competitive club throughout the 2026-27 NBA season.

NBA.com's season preview similarly frames Memphis as entering a new era centered on Boozer and Coward after an extensive offseason overhaul.

Just don't set your expectations too high.
