Powell's absence impacts playoff push and lucrative contract talks as the Miami Heat navigates roster changes and future financial flexibility.
Ahead of Wednesday night’s matchup against the Boston Celtics, the Miami Heat have six games remaining on the regular-season schedule. They’re currently 40-36, ninth in the Eastern Conference standings. Coming off a significant 119-109 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, the sense of urgency needs to remain high.
However, injuries continue to plague the team, with the latest being Norman Powell. The first-time All-Star guard will miss his second consecutive game due to an upper respiratory illness. Powell has dealt with injuries throughout the season, most notably with either back tightness or a groin strain.
The 32-year-old is on pace to finish with career-highs across the board, averaging 22.1 points on 47.3 percent shooting, 38.4 percent three-point shooting, 3.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.1 steals in 55 games.
As the Heat still fight to get out of the Play-In Tournament, Powell’s availability has been inconsistent following the All-Star break, appearing in only 10 games. It’s left more responsibilities for Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro to pick up.
The 11-year veteran is currently without a timetable to return.
Powell was the Heat’s go-to option when the season started, mainly due to Herro recovering from offseason surgery. It’s what allowed him to build an All-Star case. However, when the team is fully healthy, roles shift differently.
In matchups against the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, and San Antonio Spurs, coach Erik Spoelstra had Powell come off the bench. He didn’t entirely agree with the change, but would do what was best for the team.
Given the lack of availability late in the season could affect the business side of basketball in free agency. Powell’s contract is expiring, eligible to sign a four-year, $128.5 million extension. The Heat have the bird rights for the former Toronto Raptors champion, which allows them to go over the cap to re-sign him.
However, there will be other factors playing in negotiations outside of Powell’s late health concerns. Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Pelle Larsson are extension eligible and Andrew Wiggins contains a $30.17 million player option for the 2026-27 season.
The Heat have been adamant about absorbing big future salaries, trying to keep the financial books clean to go after future free agent superstars. Despite an All-Star caliber season, plus the latest lack of availability, Powell’s future with the organization could result in being one-and-done.
The team will prepare to face the Celtics on Wednesday night, who already clinched a spot in the playoffs. Superstar forward Jayson Tatum is currently not listed on the injury report.
Regardless of who’s available or not, the Heat’s level of urgency needs to remain high to fight for any chance of getting out of the Play-In Tournament. Tipoff time is at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
