Ahead of a three-game road trip, the Miami Heat are currently riding a five-game losing streak, coming off a 136–111 outing against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night. They were outmatched in nearly every statistical category, especially in rebounding, 62-38. The offense was sluggish and the defense wasn’t sustainable enough to recover.
Bam Adebayo, who’s managed to break numerous records this season, couldn’t make up for the Heat’s struggles. He finished with 18 points on 29.4 percent shooting, 20 percent from three-point range, three rebounds, four assists, and a steal in 29 minutes. There was a moment between coach Erik Spoelstra and Adebayo when being subbed out of the game in the second quarter.
Following the loss, the three-time All-Star explained what was missing against the Spurs.
“We didn’t bring a competitive spirit,” he said on Monday. “That’s really what it was. Shout out to Myron Gardner. Y’all notice Myron because he plays that hard and we need to honestly match his energy, all of us. If we play like that, we’d be a totally different team. Our energy has to shift. Basketball is going to be basketball. We miss shots, whatever, but we got to keep playing through missed shots. I felt like we let missed shots get in our head and it affected us on the [defensive] end.”
The Heat have 10 games remaining on the regular season schedule, currently with a 38-34 record, ninth in the Eastern Conference standings. They’re on pace to finish in the Play-In Tournament for a fourth consecutive season. The team will face the Cleveland Cavaliers twice, then the Indiana Pacers in the upcoming three-game road trip.
The number of opportunities is cutting thin to secure a top-six seed, automatically qualifying for the playoffs. The Heat are only currently two games behind, with the next home game being against the Philadelphia 76ers, who are currently seventh in the standings. The winner of the Monday, March 30, matchup will own the season tiebreaker.
As the “Captain” of the Heat, Adebayo has shown up as a leader on multiple occasions. However, as every game moving forward is a “must-win,” he needs to display a level of dominance.
In the final 10 games of the regular season, five opponents have winning records.
The Heat still have a chance to get out of the Play-In Tournament, but there will need to be a higher sense of urgency from the whole team.
“We got 10 games left, it’s we either do or we don’t,” Adebayo added. “We know how that can go. We’re just burying ourselves in a hole if we don’t figure it out sooner than later."
