The Miami Heat look to bounce back from a difficult 136–111 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night. Outside of a tight first quarter, they were dominated the rest of the game, finishing with a disadvantage in nearly every statistical category. Following the loss, Bam Adebayo mentioned that there was a lack of “competitive spirit” from the Heat.
“Basketball is going to be basketball,” he said. “We miss shots, whatever, but we got to keep playing through missed shots. I felt like we let missed shots get in our head and it affected us on the [defensive] end.”
After asking coach Erik Spoelstra about whether or not Adebayo’s comments raised a level of concern at Tuesday’s practice, he simply believes it was a one-time event.
“We’ve proven that we have a great competitive spirit,” he told HeatRoundtable. “It’s just one game before that. We have to have that consistency with it in these moments of truth. These games are the moments of truth right now. We’re playing against very good teams that are playing for something. That’s what you want as competitors, but we have to rise to that challenge collectively.”
After the Orlando Magic’s 136–131 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night, plus the Charlotte Hornets’ 134–90 win over the Sacramento Kings, the Heat currently sit at 10th in the Eastern Conference standings. However, a path out of the Play-In Tournament isn’t virtually impossible with only two games behind from claiming a top-six seed.
10 games are remaining on the Heat’s regular-season schedule. They will begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday night, facing the Cavaliers and again on Friday, ending it with a Sunday evening matchup against the Indiana Pacers. Afterwards, the team will host a three-game homestand, starting with the Philadelphia 76ers. That particular Monday night matchup holds significant value as both teams are currently in the Play-In bracket, with the season series tied at 1-1.
Also, Sixers star forward Paul George would have already returned after serving a 25-game suspension due to violations of the NBA and National Basketball Players’ Association’s anti-drug policy.
The number of opportunities is cutting thin for the Heat as the regular season reaches the finale. However, coach Spoelstra looks forward to the challenge.
“[It’s a] great opportunity,” he added. “When you go through the fire together and trying to develop this grit, the way to do it is in these pressure moments. We just have to rise to the level, collectively. We’re fully capable of it.”
