Former Miami Heat player Chris Bosh had his career cut short because of a blood clot condition
Former Miami Heat player Chris Bosh is one of the biggest "what ifs" in NBA history.
His career was cut short in 2016 when he was unable to recover from a blood clot diagnosis. Although Bosh was still inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, he would have accomplished far more had he stayed healthy.
His playing days ended at the age of 31 but he officially retired in 2019.
“Yeah, you know, the health is good," Bosh said in an interview with FOS News. "I got off to a bit of a rough start for 2026 back in January, but I take my medicine. I make sure I've seen more doctors than I've seen in my whole lifetime of being an athlete. I'm making sure I'm taking the precautions, and that's going well.”
Bosh was a member of the famed 2003 NBA draft class that included LeBron James Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade. He was taken No. 4 by the Toronto Raptors, where he became a perennial All-Star. He was often overlooked during his early years because of where he played, but became a superstar in the summer of 2010.
That was when he decided to team with James and Wade in Miami, giving the Heat three of the league's top 10 players at the time. The "Big Three" era produced two championships in four straight appearances in the NBA Finals.
That team was broken up when James left for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the summer of 2014, but there was still hope for the Heat. They acquired All-Star guard Goran Dragic from the Phoenix Suns in February of 2015, causing many to think the Heat would maintain their perch atop the Eastern Conference.
Things never materialized because Bosh was diagnosed with the blood clots, which traveled to his lungs, during the All-Star break that season. Bosh returned briefly later in his career only to have the condition resurface.
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021.
