Miami's Davion Mitchell spoke to Heat RoundTable about the team's success, getting Tyler Herro back, and handling point guard assignments.

The Miami Heat have been one of the most outstanding stories in the league. They're currently riding a six-game winning streak, sitting as the third-seed in the Eastern Conference, and have one of the best offenses in the league.

Davion Mitchell, who re-signed with the organization on a two-year, $24 million contract, has been a key contributor to the team's success. He's averaging 9.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.3 steals while shooting 51 percent from the field, 37.3 percent from three-point range to start the season.

The former lottery prospect elaborated on what's been impacting the Heat's winning ways:

"I think the most part our defense," Mitchell told Heat RoundTable. "Our defensive mindset, I think we're coming to each game trying to stop people and trying to let our defense lead to our offense, and offensively, just playing with one another. Just out there having fun, and also learning how to win. I think a lot of times, last year, we got to the end of the game, teams would come back, we kind of panicked, and then losing those close games. I think this year we just learning how to win and making the right decisions each time."

In the Heat's previous two victories, against the Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks, the way they've secured those victories is drastically different from the start of the season. The team finished scoring below their average and shooting inefficiently, especially from behind the arc, below 30 percent in both games.

However, Mitchell alluded to the importance of winning the game and not focusing on the fashion they come in:

"I think the main thing is just to win the game," he added. "No matter how we win, I think some nights we're just going to make shots, some nights we're not. Some nights we're going to feel a little stagnant, some nights we're not. I think each game, we're learning from one another. You've got to think about the chemistry-wise, adding another, in my opinion, top-10 player in the league [Tyler Herro], is still a little bit different. The chemistry's going to be a little bit different. You just got to learn, watch film, and keep going through the game."

Mitchell believes that as the season progresses, it will "keep getting better" for the Heat. He has the best assist-to-turnover ratio among guards who average at least 30 minutes a game this season and emphasized not getting reckless with ball-handling assignments:

"With our talented guys offensively, I try to make the game easier for them," he said. "Using my strengths, getting in the paint, making the game easier and finding teammates, and also finishing. I just keep the game simple and don't think too much of it. As far as the turnover, I don't really do anything crazy."

Even as the Heat have regained another offensive spark with their All-Star guard, it hasn't changed Mitchell's approach, but rather remains the same.

"Obviously, [Herro] is a really good scorer," he added. "You want to find him in ways in the court where he can be free. I try to find him or [Norman Powell], guys who can shoot the ball. I just try to make the civil play, I don't really think too much of it. Just be more aggressive, getting to the paint and making plays."

Mitchell also mentioned hoping to earn All-Defensive honors before the season began. The fifth-year guard is one of the most underrated defensive guards in the league. It doesn't matter what his role is; he continues to impact winning for the Heat. They will face the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night, who previously won 13 consecutive games.
