Monday’s deadline for the Miami Heat to give Tyler Herro an extension came and went with no resolution, leaving a level of uncertainty moving forward.
The 25-year-old guard — who will miss extended time at the beginning of the season due to undergoing surgery on his left foot last month — was eligible to sign for as much as $149.7 million. Now, his next extension window will not open until July 2026. However, it will run through the entire 2026-27 season, and he will have the chance to sign for as much as $206.9 million through four years.
Recently, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented on the matter ahead of Miami’s season opener against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.
“Really, my relationship is to bring Tyler back into the mix, you know, with the team,” Spoelstra said. “We need him.”
In 77 games last season, Herro averaged a career-high 23.9 points and 5.5 assists, leading his team in both categories. The team’s reliance on him grew during the dramatic saga involving Jimmy Butler that eventually culminated in his exit via trade to the Golden State Warriors in February.
Without a clear outlook for Herro’s future in South Florida, Spoelstra’s focus remains on basketball.
“The business part of it, you know, that's between Tyler's agent and our front office. I'm encouraged by the progress he's been making from a health standpoint. And we'll just keep on moving forward.”
Recently, Herro revealed in a video on his personal YouTube account how the recovery process is going.
“Hopefully in the next week or so, I will be back on the floor and back into playing,” Herro said.
It is likely that the one-time All-Star will be out until mid-November.
“I think he sees the possibilities with our group,” Spoelstra added. “We also want to be smart about it, because he's a guy that loves to work. And he wants to be back out there.”
Erik Spoelstra Speaks Highly About Heat's Kel'el Ware: Heat sophomore center Kel'el Ware had an impressive performance in the team's first home preseason game against the Milwaukee Bucks. He recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds, but was a -21 during his time on the court. The numbers speak greatly, but the impact was missing. Afterwards, Erik Spoelstra challenged Ware to leave an impact on the game. CLICK HERE
Former Heat Superstar Throws Shady Strays: The Miami Heat are nearly 24 hours away from commencing their first full season with Jimmy Butler on the roster. It is astonishing the way that relationship ended given all the success together: three Eastern Conference Finals and two NBA Finals appearances. However, last summer changed the trajectory dramatically. CLICK HERE
