After missing out on LeBron James, is Klay Thompson a viable option for the Miami Heat?

The Heat are having a franchise-changing offseason. After acquiring Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo in a trade this offseason, the Miami Heat roster has completely changed. The team dealt Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis as part of the deal and also lost All-Star Norman Powell to the Chicago Bulls in free agency. Now, the Heat must continue to navigate the rest of this offseason with some financial restrictions as they attempt to build the roster around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Earlier this offseason, the team signed wing Tim Hardaway Jr. to a one-year deal and brought back Simone Fontecchio but there are more moves to be made. With the extension of Andrew Wiggins, the Heat opened up a little bit of money by shaving $9 million off his player option for the upcoming season as well.

One player who has reportedly been put on the trading block is veteran wing Klay Thompson of the Dallas Mavericks and the Heat apparently have some level of interest in adding the four-time NBA champion. The main priority for the Heat over the past couple of weeks was their attempt to lure LeBron James back to the franchise. However, their pursuit ended late last week when the 41-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

It seems there are two scenarios where the Heat can acquire Thompson. One is by trading Nikola Jovic to Dallas in exchange for him and the other is hoping Thompson negotiates a buyout with the Mavericks and is free to join the team on a cheaper salary than he's currently making. Given the Mavericks are still holding on to Kyrie Irving, there is a chance they see Thompson as an integral part of their rotation this season as the team notably has a good amount of youth as well and may want a few veterans to stick around for mentorship purposes.

Thompson, 36, is not the same three-point specialist he used to be but is still quite strong. With the Golden State Warriors, he and Stephen Curry formed the strongest three-point shooting backcourt in NBA history and Thompson had years of success, earning five consecutive All-Star nods. The end of his tenure in Golden State was plagued by injuries as he missed two full seasons from 2019-2021. However, it didn't seem to slow him down too much as he still posted strong numbers and helped lead Golden State to another championship in 2022. After the Finals run, Thompson's numbers started to decline as he began exiting his prime. He joined the Dallas Mavericks in 2024 on a three-year, $50 million contract. With Dallas, he has still been a solid shooter from beyond the arc.

The Heat could definitely use a player like Thompson but would it be smart to trade a young player in Jovic, who still has potential, for an older player who would only be in Miami for one guaranteed season? Heat president Pat Riley has a big decision to make if that is what it comes to.
