The Miami Heat landed their big free agent acquisition in Giannis Antetokounmpo but is he enough to make a difference?
The Miami Heat have appeased the fan base by making a big splash in the offseason.
Earlier this month, they officially completed a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Heat parted ways with Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez, Kel'el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis and a first-round pick.
Because the Heat gave up so much, some are questioning if they have enough to complete with the likes of the defending champion New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics.
And let's not forget the Philadelphia 76ers, who had perhaps the best offseason of any team in the NBA. They added LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to pair them with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, which is arguably the best starting lineup in the league.
The Heat now find themselves lacking depth because of so many departures. Herro was a consistent 20-point scorer. Jaquez was one of the league's top reserves. Ware was an emerging talent.
The only Heat consistent rotation players from last season are Pelle Larsson, Davion Mitchell, Andrew Wiggins and Nikola Jovic. There are the additions of Tim Hardaway Jr., and Bobby Portis but are they enough to put them in the same category as the Knicks, Sixers and Pistons?
And even if the Heat are able to add another All-Star talent such as a DeMar DeRozan or Klay Thompson before free agency ends, is that enough? While they can compete defensively, there is a desperate need for offense.
Antetokounmpo is still a 25-point a game scorer but he is now paired with Bam Adebayo, who has struggled with inconsistency as a scorer. The Heat need Adebayo to boost his play on the offensive end to have any chance of staying competitive.
Even though Adebayo had the epic 82-point game, we have yet to see him produce offensively on a daily basis. The bottom line is this: if the Heat are unable to add another scorer, this team makeover won't have an impact until next season.
