The Miami Heat have lost three consecutive games following a 134–126 outing against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. Despite leading by as many as 15 points, the past haunting of the third quarter returned. Also, a couple of historic performances were on display at the Kaseya Center.
Key takeaways from the game:
Lakers; Stars shining: It’s been over a week since Bam Adebayo’s 83-point performance. However, on the second night of a back-to-back, superstar Luka Doncic was able to pull off a similar stunt. He finished with a new season-high 60 points on 60 percent shooting, including nine three-pointers made, seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals in 38 minutes.
The 28-year-old is known to be one of the best scorers in the league. It doesn’t matter what defenses Luka faces; he’s difficult to rush or disrupt.
Also, it’s the most points scored by a Lakers player since Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant’s 60-point game in his final NBA game on April 13, 2016.
Alongside Doncic, LeBron James followed a 30-point performance on 92.9 percent shooting against the Houston Rockets with a triple-double against the Heat. The 41-year-old finished with 19 points on 66.7 percent shooting, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists in 38 minutes.
James continues to defy the odds against “Father Time.”
Heat; Fighting old ghosts: During the seven-game win streak, the Heat either won or tied the third quarter. However, after trailing the entire first half, the Lakers sparked a 24-8 run, allowing them to pull away with a significant 13-point lead.
The game ultimately went down to the wire throughout the fourth quarter, but the Heat’s sluggish defense in the third became too difficult to overcome.
The Heat fall to a 38-32 record, dropping to eighth in the Eastern Conference standings. On the same night, the Orlando Magic suffered a 130–111 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. Despite not knowing in real time, the Heat had an opportunity to make up for lost ground in the standings.
Instead, the game of catch-up continues.
The Heat will face the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center on Saturday night. They’ll be coming off a back-to-back against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, who are currently riding a 10-game win streak.
There are only 12 games left before the regular season concludes. If the Heat don’t manage to string together enough wins, they will finish in the Play-In Tournament for a fourth consecutive season. The number of opportunities is cutting thin.
