The Miami Heat dominated from beginning to end on Tuesday night with a 150–129 victory over the Washington Wizards. After Bam Adebayo’s historic play, the win streak extends to six games, tied for the best in the league. Despite missing key rotation players, including Tyler Herro (left quadriceps soreness) and Andrew Wiggins (left big toe sesamoiditis), the “captain” of the franchise took complete control.
- Heat; Hot start and historic finish: Adebayo wasted little time establishing a rhythm offensively. He scored 31 of the team’s 40 points on 62.5 percent shooting, including five three-pointers made, in 12 first-quarter minutes. The 28-year-old came out aggressively and didn’t slow down. It’s the most first-quarter points scored by a Heat player.
Adebayo continues to leave an imprint on the franchise’s records. He wound up with 43 first-half points, which is the highest this season. The previous holder was San Antonio Spurs’ star Victor Wembanyama, scoring 37 on Feb. 10 against the Los Angeles Lakers.
The three-time All-Star finished with a new career-high, scoring 83 points, which set a new franchise record for the most points scored in a single game. Adebayo surpassed LeBron James, who scored 61 against the Charlotte Bobcats on March 3, 2014. He’s the third player in league history to score at least 80 points in a single game.
Adebayo’s 81 performance is the second-highest scoring game in league history, surpassing Los Angeles Lakers superstar and Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 22, 2006. Adebayo finished with nine rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks in 42 total minutes as well.
Also, he made 36 of 43 free throw attempts.
- Heat; Capitalizing on mistakes: The Wizards have the second-youngest age average, 24.9, in the league. Despite adding a couple of veterans at the trade deadline in All-Star Trae Young and Anthony Davis, both of whom didn’t play on Tuesday night, it was still a developmental period, which means mistakes were bound to happen.
The Heat forced 23 turnovers and scored 31 points off them.
They improved to a 37-29 record, sixth in the Eastern Conference standings. Adebayo continues to break records, exceeding expectations since being drafted with the 14th pick in 2017. He was considered just a defender, plus a lob threat. Adebayo accomplished something very few have done before him.
The Heat needed everyone to step up on Tuesday night with a shorthanded roster, but the “captain” decided to take matters into his hands.
