Following a star-studded offseason, Miami could bolster its bench by targeting former All-American Johni Broome to provide youthful interior depth behind the Heat’s newly formed veteran core.
The Miami Heat have had a very prolific offseason, adding multiple big-name players such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson. Even with these veterans coming in, there are some under-the-radar moves the team has been making to add depth to the roster. Last week, the Heat, through their G-League affiliate, added former first-round pick Mo Bamba to fight for a roster spot. Earlier this week, the Heat made another move, adding young guard Bez Mbeng. The guard was claimed off waivers by Miami prior to the beginning of the preseason in a couple of weeks.
Now, there is another player who became recently available in free agency and could be a similar under-the-radar move with low risk and high reward. On Thursday afternoon, the Los Angeles Clippers waived big man Johni Broome. He could be a solid option for the Heat to add with their final available roster spot.
Broome, 24, had one of the best college careers of the decade thus far. He originally began his collegiate play at Morehead State in the Ohio Valley Conference and in his first season, he helped lead the Eagles to the first round of the NCAA tournament. After two seasons with them, the joined the Auburn Tigers as a transfer and the rest of his college tenure was one for the history books. In three seasons with the Tigers, he was named to two First-team All-SEC rosters while earning multiple accolades in 2025 such as the SEC Player of the Year award and The Sporting News Player of the Year while also being a consensus first-team All-American.
After his strong stretch with Auburn, he declared for the 2025 draft where he was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the early second round. He did not play much with the NBA roster last season, only appearing in 11 games and posting pretty dreadful numbers. However, he was one of the best players in the G-League, averaging 22.9 points and eight rebounds.
The 76ers had a big offseason, adding a whole group of new players and Broome was one of the odd men out of the rotation. He was traded to the Clippers in July so the team could free up cap space to sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Obviously, it seems Los Angeles didn't view Broome that highly and he was waived by them this week.
The Heat have a lot of veterans taking up bench roles on the roster at the moment but adding a young player like Broome could be a decent addition for a team that needs more youth after their offseason.
