Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has yet to win to the NBA's Coach of the Year award
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has accomplished so much throughout his career.
He won two NBA championships, have six appearances in the Finals and was named one of the league's Top 15 coaches of all-time. Still, one honor has always eluded him. He's never won Coach of the Year despite his impressive resume.
On Tuesday, the award went to Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla. And rightfully so. He did a masterful job while the Celtics played without superstar Jayson Tatum for most of the season because he was recovering from an Achilles injury.
The Celtics still finished with 56 wins, which was second in the Eastern Conference. They lost in the first round to the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games but it was hard to criticize Mazzulla after the strong regular season.
It just seems the chances of Spoelstra winning the award are fading as each year passes. His best opportunity to grab the honor came during the LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh era from 2010-14. The Heat won two championships in four straight Finals appearances.
Many felt Spoelstra deserved it at some point in that era because of the job he did managing the egos of three of the league's top 10 players. The Heat are arguably the most scrutinized teams in NBA history because many credit it for starting the super teams era.
The knock on Spoelstra was he coached a team that was loaded with talent. Bosh and Wade are already in the Hall of Fame while James is a sure lock for first-ballot. Spoelstra was often discredited, sometimes being called nothing more than a chaperone.
But Spoelstra proved his worth then and strengthened it after by leading the Heat on two magical runs to the Finals. In 2020, they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers during the "bubble" season. Then they advanced as a No. 8 seed in 2023, where they lost to the Denver Nuggets.
That alone should show Spoelstra can have success without having the best players.
