Following the blockbuster addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Miami could target Darius Garland to fix backcourt depth issues and solidify a championship-caliber big three.

The Miami Heat had a big offseason, adding Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, as part of that trade, the Heat parted with four players and also lost All-Star guard Norman Powell to the Chicago Bulls in free agency. Despite making the big franchise-swinging move by getting Antetokounmpo, there have been concerns about the team's lack of depth. The Heat made a lot of stop-gap veteran moves to fill holes on the bench for the upcoming season, but there is a name beginning to float around in trade rumors who would be a strong acquisition for Miami.

Darius Garland, 26, could be an interesting name for the Heat to monitor if he becomes available and it is becoming more likely by the day that he does. Garland's name has been connected to potential trade discussions surrounding the Los Angeles Clippers and the team could eventually decide that moving him is the best way to restock its asset collection. The Clippers recently lost five first-round picks as punishment following the NBA's investigation into Kawhi Leonard and the organization, leaving their long-term outlook in a difficult position.

The point guard is a two-time All-Star with some relevant playoff experience and would give Miami another high-level scorer and playmaker alongside Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. While a trade for Garland may not make too much sense at the moment, circumstances could change quickly once the season gets underway.

For the Heat, adding Garland could go a long way toward strengthening the core of the backcourt. Miami has made several veteran additions this offseason, but the team still has questions surrounding its point guard situation. Davion Mitchell has turned into a dependable player, but can he be the starting point guard of a true contending team? That's a question Pat Riley and the front office may need to consider.

Garland would immediately become the most talented guard on Miami's roster but he certainly is not perfect either. His defensive skillsets leave a bit to be desired and he has had injury concerns as well. The guard only played in 45 games this past season and only played in 57 throughout the 2023-24 campaign. However, if the right opportunity presents itself, Miami should at least explore it. Garland, Antetokounmpo and Adebayo would give the Heat three legitimate offensive stars and could potentially form one of the most talented trios in the Eastern Conference.

Miami is already expected to return to legitimate contention but if there is a hole on the team that could be upgraded, it is the point guard position and Garland would be a great addition to an already loaded roster.
