The Charlotte Hornets could acquire Dennis Schroder from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Charlotte Hornets could trade for Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dennis Schroder, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Cleveland may need to move Schroder to create cap space for LeBron James or Jonathan Kuminga.
"The Charlotte Hornets have been linked with interest in Schroder, league sources told HoopsHype," Scotto wrote. "It’s worth noting that Hornets executive Jeff Peterson is said to still be a fan of Schroder dating back to their time together in Atlanta."
Schroder will make $14,809,200 next season and $15,514,400 during the 2027-28 season. The Cavaliers acquired the veteran from the Sacramento Kings last season. Schroder averaged 12.8 points and 5.3 assists per game with the Kings and 8.2 points and 4.3 assists per game with the Cavaliers.
The 32-year-old Schroder has been in the NBA since 2013 and he has played for many teams. The Braunschweig native has played for the Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, Kings and Cavaliers.
Charlotte traded LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves this summer. Coby White will start at point guard for the Hornets next season. Charlotte may want to acquire Schroder to be White's backup.
Schroder has career averages of 13.7 points and 4.9 assists per game in the regular season and 10.7 points and 3.4 assists per game in the playoffs. It will be fascinating to see if he's on the Hornets next season.
The Hornets are expected to start White, Brandon Miller, Kon Knueppel, Naz Reid and Moussa Diabaté next season. That's a strong starting five on paper.
Charlotte missed the playoffs this past season by one game. The franchise hasn't made the playoffs since 2016, but the future of the team looks bright with White, Miller, Knueppel, Reid and Diabaté leading the way.
Next season will be the first time in his NBA career that Reid will be a starter. It will be intriguing to see how the 26-year-old performs in head coach Charles Lee's system.
Reid won the 2023-24 Sixth Man of the Year Award. He enters next season with career averages of 11.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in the regular season and 10.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game in the playoffs.
For Minnesota this past season, Reid averaged 13.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 45.6% from the field, 36.2% from beyond the arc and 73.2% from the free-throw line. He recorded six double-doubles.
Reid will make $23,275,862 next season. Multiple teams have tried to acquire him from the Hornets, but Charlotte is keeping the talented big man.
