Sacramento is reportedly "enamored" with the Arkansas standout. Explore why Scott Perry’s deep-rooted connection and the prospect’s explosive scoring potential make him the franchise's top backcourt target.
With the Sacramento Kings' No. 6 overall pick, the front office has multiple premier options at the point guard position, including Houston's Kingston Flemings, Illinois' Keaton Wagler, and Arkansas' Darius Acuff Jr.
However, one of these elite backcourt prospects has been heavily linked to the Kings, with Senior NBA Insider Michael Scotto reporting that Sacramento is "enamored" with the reigning SEC Player of the Year.
"It’s worth noting Sacramento’s general manager, Scott Perry, coached Darius Acuff Sr. at Eastern Kentucky, as Sacramento is in search of a long-term floor general for the future. Should Acuff Jr. be off the board, other guards such as Keaton Wagler, Mikel Brown Jr., and Kingston Flemings could be available," Scotto wrote on HoopsHype.
Sacramento has been a popular landing spot for Acuff in recent mocks as well, with NBA Journalist Evan Sidery and Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor' both predicting this outcome.
Following a strong combine, Acuff illustrated what he wants to be at the next level.
"Definitely a superstar point guard," Acuff said. "I'll bring a lot of excitement to any city I go."
Prior to the combine, size concerns had been the main question mark with Acuff, but he measured in well, standing at 6-foot-2 with a 6'7" wingspan.
Offensively, Acuff has no question marks in his game, but he needs to improve as a defender.
The Athletic's Sam Vecenie highlighted some of these concerns in a pre-lottery mock.
"Even though Acuff is stocky and strong, he’s easily the worst defender among the top-10 prospects," Vecenie wrote. "He struggles to get through screens and shows a lack of off-ball engagement too regularly. Of course, in the NBA, volatile scorers like Acuff can overcome defensive struggles with lighting up the offensive end, but he will need to improve defensively in order to stay on the court and out of foul trouble."
In today's changing landscape of NBA basketball, undersized, ball-dominant guards are losing value due to their defensive woes, with All-NBA caliber players like Trae Young and Darius Garland being shopped for low-value packages.
But, Acuff's scoring prowess and time with Arkansas head coach John Calipari gives him a high offensive floor.
Calipari has great history with guards he has coached to the league, but Acuff has been identified as perhaps the best prospect of them all.
For Sacramento, who is multiple pieces away from contention, the brass will likely take a best available approach.
If Acuff is available, it will be hard to justify passing up on a player with such explosive talent.
