The Sacramento Kings are making it abundantly clear that Darius Acuff Jr. is the primary option on the team. Through the opening three games, Acuff's 73 shots attempted are an NBA record, while his efficiencies continue to rise.
Through the Sacramento Kings' opening three games, one thing is clear - Darius Acuff Jr. has the ultimate green light.
Acuff has taken 73 shots through his first three games, which is a new NBA record.
He is also the only player to ever take at least 20 shots in each of his fist three outings, which has drawn some attention from former players and people around the league.
Following his debut, 2014-2015 NBA All-Star point guard Jeff Teague talked about Acuff on the Club 520 podcast.
"He don’t got no conscience. I swear he don’t got a conscience..." Teague said. "I was like ‘bro you are 0-8 from 3!’ I’ve never seen a rookie like that."
Teague has been a big supporter of Acuff since before the draft kicked off, calling him his favorite player in the class and naming him as a potential Rookie of the Year Dark Horse.
While Acuff's 5-for-24 debut was not the performance the Kings anticipated, he was taking good shots that he would usually knock down, just failing to do so.
In his last two appearances, Acuff's efficiency has risen slightly, as he begins to look more comfortable on the court.
Allowing him to get his shots up and get as many reps as possible seems to be the focus for head coach Doug Christie and his staff, as the rookie guard has shown no signs of slowing down his aggressiveness.
Following his 33-point performance against the Portland Trail Blazers, Acuff received major praise from Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis.
"I told you guys from the get-go, I’m not worried about Darius at all," LaVine said. "You guys can see how talented he is."
Sabonis, who has also had a very strong start to the year, called Acuff a "very, very smart, high-IQ player," seconding LaVine's remarks.
Having the veterans' support is huge, as it shows they trust Acuff to take the shots he is taking and want him to work through his growing pains.
For Acuff, improved efficiency will come, as it is not uncommon for high-usage guards to experience some growing pains early in their NBA transitions.
Heading into Tuesday night's matchup against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, Acuff will face his most-difficult defensive challenge yet.
Look for Acuff to try to make a bigger impact as a passer against Wembanyama and the Spurs' lengthy defense.
The Kings look to pick up their first victory against San Antonio at 8:00 p.m.
