Kings Rookie PG Acuff Shuts Down Potential Workouts

With Darius Acuff Jr. continuing to find his footing at the NBA level, the Sacramento Kings are giving him the runway to make mistakes. Heading into Thursday's matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans, Acuff continues to check all the boxes with his level of focus.

Through the opening four games of the NBA season, the Sacramento Kings are looking like they are headed for another rebuilding season.

But, this time around, the front office has a clear vision of who they are building around - Darius Acuff Jr.

Thus far, Acuff is averaging 21.5 points and 4.8 assists per game, but efficiencies have been a problem.

Nevertheless, the No. 7 overall pick has shown flashes of his unique scoring ability and impressive playmaking.

Another thing that has stood out is Acuff's continued focus on improvement, as he has talked about wanting to carve out his own legacy.

On Wednesday, Acuff joined the SiriusXM NBA Radio show, where he was asked about potentially working out with players from his draft class.

Acuff quickly shot down the idea, while saying there's "no point" in trying to fraternize with his opponents.

This competitive mindset has been evident through Acuff's young career, and was one of the traits that piqued General Manager Scott Perry's interest in the pre-draft process.

Acuff's on-court ability is impressive, but Perry said his most impressive attribute is how much he loves the game.

At Kings Media Day, Perry said that Acuff has a rare drive to be great, and that has been evident in his comments since being drafted.

After a rough debut, shooting just 5-for-24 from the field, Acuff bounced back with a 33-point outing against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Prior to his debut in front of the Sac Town faithful, Acuff took the mic and made a promise to his new fanbase.

"We're gonna compete, we're gonna work hard every game," Acuff said. "And we're going to play for y'all."

His first home-game performance marked the highest single-game scoring output from a teenager in Kings franchise history, beating out the rest of his class to the first 30-point outing.

Following the game, Acuff was asked about his stellar night, where he once again reiterated his main focus.

"It was good, but it don't matter," Acuff said. "We lost. Nothing I want more than to win, so everything I do is fine, but if we don't get the win, it really don't matter."

As the Kings advance through the season, Acuff will need to find more ways to impact winning outside of his offense, but having him showing these flashes early on is promising.

Thursday night's matchup against the also winless New Orleans Pelicans presents a good opportunity for Acuff to secure NBA win No. 1, tipping off at 8:00 p.m.
