Projecting the ceiling for the Sacramento Kings heading into the 2026 season.
The Sacramento Kings head into the 2026 season after making a variety of moves that include signing veteran guard Ben Simmons, drafting rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr., and just recently signing veteran guard Elfrid Payton to a training camp deal.
With this moves adding to players already on the roster, it is worth wondering what the ceiling of this team might be. So, let's project that ceiling and see where this team may end up at the conclusion of the upcoming season.
When looking at this roster, one of the biggest strengths is the backcourt and how much scoring they can get from it. In the backcourt, the Kings have Zach LaVine, Darius Acuff Jr., Malik Monk, Nique Clifford, Ben Simmons, Emmanuel Sharp, Daeqwon Plowden, and potentially Elfrid Payton if he makes the roster with a strong training camp.
Based on the sheer number of guards in the backcourt, it is going to be interesting to see how head coach Doug Christie manages the rotation and if any of the guards are left of it.
Now shifting focus to the front court, the Kings are in a decent position as they have forwards DeAndre Hunter, Keegan Murray, Precious Achiuwa, and Alex Karaban in addition to centers Domantas Sabonis, Maxime Raynaud, Dylan Cardwell, and Jonathan Mogbo.
After seeing the players the Kings have in the front court, it seems like the front court is in a decent spot when it comes to depth, especially if the younger players can progress throughout the 2026 season.
While the Kings do have Sabonis as the projected center, it is possible that he leaves Sacramento, as there have been some rumors this offseason that he may get traded and that the Kings would acquire Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren to replace Sabonis.
At this point, Sabonis is still on the roster so this projection will assume that he is on the roster for the 2026 season.
With that said, looking at last season, the Kings were not very competitive as they finished 22-60 and were near the bottom of the Western Conference.
Even though the Kings did fair well last season and most of the roster does return, there were lots of injuries which included Sabonis, LaVine, and Murray being out for significant time which no doubt played a role in Sacramento having struggles throughout the 2026 season.
After looking at last season and the changes that have been made to the roster this season, my projection for the Kings' ceiling is for them to finish as a play-in tournament team with a range of 35-41 wins and compete for a playoff spot.
Heading into the 2026 season, the Kings have plenty of young players who can develop and have veterans who should be much healthier which should mean this team can take a step forward to become a play-in tournament team and potentially could make the postseason if everything goes according to plan.
