Taking a look at the biggest looming question for the Sacramento Kings backcourt ahead of the 2026 season.
The Sacramento Kings have a fairly interesting offseason that has been filled with trade rumors and speculation as well as the acquisition of young talent.
With that said, the backcourt in particular is very interesting to consider, with one key question still looming for head coach Doug Christie and the Kings.
How will the point guard rotation work out for the Kings with so many unique skill sets in the room?
This does seem to be one of the bigger questions for the Kings in 2026, and it was actually alluded to in the point guard primer, but now it is time to dive a little deeper.
At the point guard position, the Kings have rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr., as well as veterans Zach LaVine, Malik Monk, Ben Simmons, Elfrid Payton (training camp deal), and Adam Flagler as possible candidates in the rotation at the point guard position.
Currently, Acuff does seem to be the expected starter while LaVine is expected to start at shooting guard, but it is possible that the Kings could get creative with the rotation and move some things around.
Heading into 2026, Acuff is a rookie, so the Kings need to see if he is truly ready for a big role, or if he does need time to develop. With that, it is possible that Monk and Simmons could see some solid minutes at point guard due to their experience and ability to initiate and run an offense.
Additionally, LaVine could contribute as well with his experience, added onto the fact that he is one of the Kings' top scorers and with that in mind he could help a lot to help alleviate some of he pressure off Acuff.
Ultimately, there are so many different ways that this could work out, and really a lot of it does depend on how Acuff is able to progress and handle the pressure. Each rookie is different, so it will be interesting to watch how he reacts to the NBA pace and physicality, as well as the mental side of things, because that can be a very hard aspect to adjust to as well.
Now, even if Acuff does handle his rookie season well, it is very possible that Christie will still want to use different players at point guard, like Monk, Simmons, LaVine, and Payton.
Using a variety of players at point guard could be something that Christie opts to do to take advantage of certain matchups, but in the end, that will be something that gets determined in training camp and throughout the early part of the regular season.
When it comes time to make a decision, I believe that Acuff will be the starter and then Christie will utilize different matchups and play a blend of Monk and Simmons at backup point guard to give Acuff a rest, but also potentially allow Acuff to play off ball which could allow the rookie to find a great role in the offense.
So, heading into the 2026 season, it will be interesting to see how Christie and the Kings choose to manage the point guard rotation by evaluating Acuff's performance in his rookie season as well as what the veterans could possibly bring to the rotation.
