Can the New York Knicks repeat as champions?
The New York Knicks are still basking in the championship celebration after winning their first title since 1973 when they defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
The Knicks will enter the season as the reigning champions and will look to do what no team has done since the 2017 and 2018 Golden State Warriors: go back-to-back.
Since 2019, eight different teams have won a championship, showing a level of parity in the league that has been present for decades. Though recent champions may have been the favorites entering the following season as the reigning kings, it's been proven just how difficult it is to repeat in the NBA.
Jalen Brunson Is Confident
Speaking to Taylor Rooks during Fanatics Fest, Finals MVP Jalen Brunson was confident in the Knicks' chances to repeat.
"I know one and two are going to be good," Brunson said. " ... I have the utmost confidence in us night in and night out just because of the way we've been able to work through these couple of years. If we have that same, if not better work ethic and mindset, obviously, I like our chances. But we gotta quickly turn the page and forget about Mr. Larry [O'Brien Trophy] over there at some point.
"Not now, not now."
Brunson was joined on stage by Mikal Bridges, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Josh Hart, four of the five starters for the team.
Promising Outlook
The Knicks will bring back their entire starting lineup, the four aforementioned players, along with OG Anunoby.
They're also bringing back Jose Alvarado, Miles McBride, Landry Shamet, and Jordan Clarkson. They lost Mitchell Robinson to the Boston Celtics, but added Andre Drummond to replace his under the rim scoring and rebounding.
Running back the majority of the team that went 16-3 in the playoffs is a good start, but the Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, and Denver Nuggets all returned key players from their championship teams and only the Thunder made it past the second round the following season.
The Knicks likely won't enter this season as the favorites with the Spurs improving after adding Tobias Harris, and the Thunder bringing back its core team with the expectation of health.
They will be the favorites to come out of the East, though the Philadelphia 76ers got better, the Boston Celtics leaned into even more three-point shooting, the Miami Heat added Giannis Antetokounmpo, and LeBron James could swing any team over the top.
