Jalen Brunson is sitting out the LeBron James sweepstakes.

The New York Knicks might not be front runners, or really even in the conversation, for LeBron James in free agency this offseason, but that doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been speculation in the past that have attached them to him.

James has reportedly expressed interest in joining the Knicks in the past, however the Knicks winning a championship and the additional pressure that comes with that accolade seemingly stunted their ability to land the future Hall of Famer.

Still, with so many stars from different teams publicly and privately making their case to James to join their respective teams, it’s worth considering if any Knicks players have done the same.

On that front, star Jalen Brunson would presumably be the lead in that effort.

Brunson Staying Quiet

However, when asked about it, Brunson said he is sticking to basketball and leaving the front office decisions to the front office.

“My job is to put the ball in the hoop. Try and play a little defense. There’s people who are above me who determine who’s on the team and who’s not. I’ll leave the pitching to them," Brunson said (via NBA Courtside).

Considering what’s happened the last few weeks, including a championship and Brunson undergoing wrist surgery ,Brunson may be right to not put too much emphasis on trying to recruit James.

The Knicks haven’t been seriously considered as a suitor for James since the early process of his free agency with teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Miami, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers all being proposed as more likely candidates.

Do the Knicks Need James?

On top of that, the Knicks have a fairly complete roster, especially after retaining Landry Shamet and signing Andre Drummond to replace Mitchell Robinson as the next backup center behind Karl Anthony towns, and adding James in at this point could disrupt the chemistry that has made New York so successful as of late.

While it’s hard to imagine a world where James doesn’t elevate any team that he joins and his own star power and marketability do make him a possibly productive pairing with the New York media market, the Knicks have already shown that they can do just fine on their own.

Brunson, true to his work ethic and personality, is sticking to basketball for the time being and while he has become one of the most influential voices in the NBA at the moment, he won’t be using that voice it seems to try and bring James over to New York.
