Jalen Brunson is ready for the season opener.
The Knicks players will receive their rings while the banner will be hung in the rafters. While the celebration is going on, Sixers players, including the newly acquired LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, will be watching on, getting ready to try and play spoiler on the big night.
The Sixers vs. Knicks is one of the most anticipated games of the season, not only because it's the first primetime game of the season and banner night, but because it marks LeBron's debut with the Sixers in what could be one of his final appearances at the Garden.
Jalen Brunson Speaks
Appearing on Today, Knicks superstar and reigning Finals MVP Jalen Brunson spoke about the first game of the season.
“Fireworks for sure. I mean they’re going to be electric, they’re going to be definitely a team to keep your eye on. They reloaded this year. It’s going to be a tough test. But we will be ready," he said.
The last defending NBA champions to lose on opening night were the Los Angeles Lakers, coming off the 2020 championship. They lost to the Los Angeles Clippers the following season.
LeBron James was part of that Lakers squad.
LeBron will now look to ruin ring night for another team and get his 76ers tenure off on the right foot.
Looking At The Matchup
The Knicks will be returning their same starting lineup that won the championship with Brunson, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and Karl-Anthony Towns.
The Sixers will have a completely different lineup with LeBron James and Jaylen Brown as new starters alongside Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid.
We've seen in the past that it can take several games for stars to get acclimated to their new teams, especially against an established group on opening night.
LeBron, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade lost to the Boston Celtics on opening night. Kevin Durant and the Golden State Warriors lost their first game against the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks are no strangers to major offseason changes that didn't lead to immediate success, as they lost their opener in 2024 to the defending champion Boston Celtics after acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges in the offseason.
Both teams will be facing pressure on opening night, and the Garden will no doubt be rocking.
