The New York Knicks have been in a rough spot as of late, going from the NBA Cup Champions to a team that looked like an Eastern Conference Finals appearance would be a stretch to repeat. However, after securing a historic win over the Brooklyn Nets, Saturday was an opportunity to get back in control of their season.
Matching up against the Philadelphia 76ers on the road, they were coming off an overtime victory over the Houston Rockets, as Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid combined for 68 points and 20 assists in the win. Needing a win in a crucial spot, the Knicks delivered.
Despite the 76ers shooting 51% from the field, the Knicks had 16 more shot attempts than them, in large part due to their 19 offensive rebounds. Even with the 76ers making a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, they came up short as the Knicks secured a 112-109 win, their first time winning back-to-back games in 2026.
While Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby had strong games offensively, scoring 31 and 23 points respectively, the play from Josh Hart and Mitchell Robinson ended up being what helped decide this game.
Hart finished with a stat line of 10 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists, with five of his rebounds being offensive. After the game, he sent a message to the fans and media who have been very critical of the Knicks as of late.
"You guys can write what you want. Three games ago, we were turning into a lottery team, and now y'all are like, oh, we’re battling up the East," Hart said (according to X user @Krisplashed).
To be fair, it was a rough stretch for the Knicks before their last two wins, going 2-9 in their prior 11 contests, with losses to the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks. However, this Knicks team has too much talent to be performing the way they've been, and they stepped up to the plate.
However, there was one negative that stood out, and that was the play of Karl-Anthony Towns. The All-NBA center posted just 10 points and six rebounds in 16 minutes of action before fouling out of the game.
After a strong start to the season, his play has regressed significantly in January, scoring less than 15 points in his past two games. While some fans may want him to be traded, it only seems like that would happen if the Knicks can orchestrate a deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose situation is unclear at the moment.
Regardless, the Knicks are back in the win column and will look to extend their winning streak to three games on Tuesday as they host the Sacramento Kings in a revenge spot.
