Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks are reportedly not close on a new deal.
This offseason, New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns became eligible for a contract extension, but both sides seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of negotiations.
NBA insider Ian Begley reports that Towns and the Knicks are "not close" to a deal. Begley went on to mention that New York is essentially offering Towns a significant pay cut, and while he reportedly is willing to take a pay cut, it may be to steep for an agreement.
The question now is whether or not the Knicks' front office will budge and go higher with their offers. Owner James Dolan has said in the past that he does not want his franchise to be a second apron team, and the team has other contract extensions that they need to worry about as well.
Geoff Burke-Imagn ImagesGuards Miles McBride and Josh Hart are also seeking extensions before the season, but neither has come close with their negotiations to working out a new deal. Hart has said that he does not want this situation to bleed into the season, but with the lack of progress on all three players' contracts, it could be the case.
In their recent championship run, all three players played significant roles in helping the Knicks reach the pinnacle. Karl-Anthony Towns arguably played the biggest role of the three because of what he was able to do on both ends and who he played against.
Towns saw the likes of Evan Mobley, Joel Embiid, and Victor Wembanyama on his way to the championship, and he stepped up his play when the challenges arose. In the Finals, Karl-Anthony Towns made big stops against Wembanyama and grabbed clutch rebounds against the San Antonio Spurs.
Scott Wachter-Imagn ImagesFor much of the playoffs, he shot the ball well from the field, and his ability to stretch the floor and shoot from the perimeter was key to New York's success. The Knicks spent the offseason bringing back key bench pieces from last season, and it's clear they'd like to retain their championship core.
Players have expressed their desire to come back and play for the franchise, so it's a matter of how the money will influence the organization makes these decisions. It will be interesting to see how Karl-Anthony Towns performs to start the season, given these stagnant contract talks. The Knicks have until next summer to work a deal out, so this could be an issue resolved sometime in the middle of the regular season.
