New York Knicks star Josh Hart Talks Defensive Troubles vs the Golden State Warriors cover image

Josh Hart speaks on what happened to the New York Knicks defensively against the Golden State Warriors

The New York Knicks dropped another game on Thursday, traveling to Golden State to face the Warriors, and losing 126-113.

The Knicks have lost three of their last four games and seven of their last nine.

The absence of Josh Hart was looked at as a big reason for their recent slide, but Hart returned to the lineup on January 11 after missing eight games, and the defense hasn't gotten any better.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Hart gave his assessment as to what went wrong against the Warriors

"We have to figure out what we're doing, not what we're doing, but we got our defense out of control, and that's something that had been a little shaky all year, but our offense has been that good," he said.

He continued, "Especially when you have guys out, you might have some lapses offensively, but that's when you gotta bring it defensively, and control the game on that side."

Defensive Issues

Even in victories, fans have to go back to December 9th for the last time the Knicks gave up less than 110 points. Their season average is that opponents are scoring 115.1 points per game, which is 13th in the league.

That number jumps to 119.6 opponent points per game over the last ten games, which is 28th in the league, just ahead of the Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans.

The return of Josh Hart was supposed to help with the defensive issues, but they're still giving up 117.3 points per game in their last three contests.

Teams are shooting 39.2% from three in their last ten games, which is third worst in the league. While hot shooting nights can come and go, the Knicks are forcing fewer turnovers than their season average and allowing teams to shoot 48.9% from the overall field, sixth worst in this stretch.

In better news, they have done a good job protecting the paint, only giving up 45.8 points per game in the paint, which is fifth best over the last ten.

Finding Offense

As mentioned by Hart, the Knicks' offense covered up some of their defensive mistakes early in the season, but that hasn't been the case as of late.

Over the last ten games, the Knicks have an offensive rating of 115.5, which is 11th in the league.

Not the worst spot, but a far cry from their 123.2 offensive rating that they amassed in December when they went 10-4 and won the NBA Cup.

A big part of their offensive fall off is their three-point shooting going from 40% (second best in the league) in December to 34% (17th in the league) in January.
