Karl-Anthony Towns is being asked to take a pay cut ahead of this season.
This offseason, center Karl-Anthony Towns became eligible for an extension with the New York Knicks. Towns is coming off a solid season with New York, as he helped them win a championship alongside Finals MVP Jalen Brunson.
His consistency on defense throughout the entire postseason was a big boost for New York, and both parties are looking to agree to a new deal that keeps him around long-term. The issue that New York is running into is the fact that they're close to the second apron.
Jalen Brunson will be eligible for a contract extension in 2027, and the Knicks may not be able to afford both Towns and Brunson's new deals. The good news for New York is that they still have this season to work something out.
Geoff Burke-Imagn ImagesAccording to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the Knicks' front office is asking Towns to take a discount on his deal, but Shams Charania of ESPN reported that he's unwilling to accept whatever New York has offered up to this point.
The last thing the Knicks want is for this situation to turn into them picking one or the other. Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson have been able to coexist since KAT's arrival in 2024, as they have made deep playoff runs in both seasons and have a championship to show for it.
Towns also makes this Knicks lineup more complete. Last season, he shot 36.8 from three-point range and is widely regarded as one of the best shooting big men in the NBA. Before Towns, center Mitchell Robinson was in the starting lineup, and while he was productive because of his presence in the interior, KAT brought a whole new element to this team.
Geoff Burke-Imagn ImagesWhat defined this last postseason run for Karl-Anthony Towns was his defense. Towns had multiple moments in the playoffs where his defense was the reason for a lot of the Knicks' success. He had multiple moments in the Finals where he played great defense on Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, and that was the true difference of the series.
Looking ahead, the Knicks have made it a clear priority to bring back their championship roster and keep their core group of players around, and it would be hard to imagine a world where New York lets KAT walk, especially after all that he's said about how much the city means to him.
