The San Antonio Spurs have had a stellar season, entering the All-Star break with the third-best record in the NBA at 38-16. A major reason for that has been the improvements on the roster, from players internally like Julian Champagnie and Keldon Johnson playing big roles.
Due to these changes, some players have been left out of the mix, with former lottery pick Jeremy Sochan among them. At the trade deadline, it was rumored that the New York Knicks attempted to trade for him, but a deal fell through. However, it ended up working out for the Knicks in the long run.
With not much need for Sochan anymore, the Spurs opted to waive their 2022 first-round pick in the final year of his deal, making way for him to join the Knicks.
A team loaded with guard talent, Sochan provides much-needed frontcourt depth for a team that is viewed as the favorite by many to make it out of the East this season.
Appearing at All-Star weekend, Spurs guard and former teammate of Sochan, Stephon Castle, spoke about his teammate and how he'll be missed in San Antonio.
"It's an everyday thing with Jeremy...we gonna miss him for sure," Castle said.
Castle shared that he and Sochan had a strong bond off the court, hanging out and playing video games with one another. Castle's career is ascending rapidly in his second season, and he'll continue to do so without his friend alongside him.
"I think he handled it as best as he could. Obviously, he wasn't getting the minutes that he wanted. I don't think his demeanor or his body language really changed. In practice, he brought the same energy...I think he handled it like a pro," he added.
Now in New York, he has a clearer path to minutes, expected to compete alongside rookie Mohammed Diawara off the bench. With New York also having some struggles defensively this season, Sochan is a player the Knicks should be able to slot next to Karl-Anthony Towns to balance that end of the floor.
"I'm happy to see him in a situation that he feels is better for him. I just wanna see him have his joy back while playing basketball," he said.
It won't be long before Sochan sees his former teammates, as the Spurs and Knicks are set to face off on March 1st on a nationally televised game on ABC. The two teams are 1-1 against each other this season, with the Knicks' win coming in the NBA Cup Finals.
Sochan might be gone, but it's a decision that's best for both teams.
