The Lakers will face the Clippers without Luka Doncic and Ziaire Williams as they try to rebound from their first loss on the second night of a back-to-back.

The Los Angeles Lakers will attempt to bounce back from their first loss of the season without Luka Doncic.

Doncic is out with back tightness for Wednesday’s matchup against the Clippers at Intuit Dome. Ziaire Williams is also out, leaving L.A. with adjustments to make on the second night of a back-to-back.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT. The Lakers enter at 3-1 following Tuesday’s 136-129 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, while the Clippers are 1-2.

L.A. won Friday’s first meeting 125-117, but the rematch presents a different challenge without its primary offensive creator.

Doncic and Williams Out Against Clippers

Doncic’s absence removes the player who scored 41 points against Portland and drives much of the Lakers’ offensive decision-making. Replacing that production will require contributions throughout the available rotation.

Austin Reaves becomes an even more important option after scoring 26 points Tuesday. The Lakers will need his scoring and playmaking, but they also need to create opportunities that keep him from having to manufacture every possession.

Williams’ absence further limits the available perimeter combinations, giving coach JJ Redick another rotation adjustment to consider.

Cameron Carr, dealing with a right oblique strain, and Adou Thiero, dealing with left knee swelling, are also out against the Clippers.

The Clippers also have significant absences. Bradley Beal, Rui Hachimura, Brandon Ingram, Jordan Miller, Yanic Konan Niederhauser and Max Strus have been ruled out.

Both teams will have to adjust, but Doncic’s absence changes how the Lakers generate their offense and distribute responsibility.

Reaves and Defensive Execution Take Center Stage

My view: The Lakers need to make Reaves’ increased workload manageable through movement, screening and decisive play from the teammates around him. Standing and waiting for him to create would make the Clippers’ defensive assignment easier.

The defensive issues from Tuesday also remain central to the matchup. After surrendering 136 points, L.A. needs better communication, stronger containment and more complete possessions that end with a rebound.

Without Doncic, those stops become especially valuable. Creating opportunities before the Clippers establish their defense could help the Lakers avoid relying entirely on half-court shot creation.

Possession management matters on the short turnaround, too. Careless passes and rushed attempts can give the Clippers easier scoring chances while putting additional pressure on a depleted Lakers rotation.

Friday’s victory provides familiarity with the opponent, but the Lakers cannot expect the same approach to produce the same result with different personnel.

For L.A., the challenge is finding enough offense around Reaves while delivering the defensive improvement that was already necessary. A more connected effort would give the Lakers their best opportunity to leave Intuit Dome with a response to their first defeat.
