The Lakers lost for the first time this season despite their offense continuing to roll.

The Portland Trail Blazers were the villains in Hollywood Tuesday night, handing the Los Angeles Lakers (3-1) their first defeat of the season at Crypto.com Arena, 136-129.

The hosts produced their second-highest-scoring performance of the young campaign, but it was not enough as Portland got hot from three-point range and found an edge on the glass.

The Blazers shot 59 percent from the field and buried 18 of their 36 attempts from beyond the arc, drawing praise from Lakers head coach JJ Redick, who said his team has some things they need to clean up defensively.

"We just got broken down a lot," he said postgame. "I thought the game plan discipline wasn't where it needs to be, and sometimes early in the season, these are good learning lessons that we can all apply."

Portland made timely buckets throughout the game, but none bigger than Damian Lillard's dagger with 43 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Lillard poured in 10 of his 21 points in the final period, burying the Lakers with his third triple of the frame, which made it 135-129. Lillard and Deni Avdija (23 points) hit four three-pointers apiece.

Redick tipped his cap to the Blazers' offensive execution while demanding more from his side in the same breath.

"I think we have to be able to rely on our defense every night," he said. "If we score 129 points at home, we should be able to get enough stops to win."

Most coaches around the league would agree with Redick's sentiment. However, the Lakers met their match in the hungry Trail Blazers on Tuesday.

Portland remained undefeated (3-0) with newcomer Ja Morant adding 23 points and Robert Williams III chipping in a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) off the bench.

Lost In The Margins

It's only the beginning of the new season, but when two good teams collide, the margin for error decreases drastically.

Several factors contributed to the Lakers losing, but the hosts making one fewer triple than Portland despite attempting seven more (17-for-43), with the Blazers in turn outrebounding Los Angeles by seven (38-31), were a couple of key differences that jumped off the page.

The Trail Blazers earned every bit of their victory, outscoring the Lakers 34-26 in the fourth quarter.

The visitors overcame another offensive eruption from Luka Doncic, who led all scorers with 41 points (12-for-22 FG). Doncic shot 6-for-15 from three and 11-for-13 at the line. He now has 93 points in his last two games. He added five rebounds and nine assists, strengthening his early MVP bid.

Austin Reaves posted 26 points and seven dimes, and Sandro Mamukelashvili was impactful off the bench with 17 points (6-for-9 FG). But the Lakers came up just short.

There is no time to dwell for the Purple and Gold, however, as they face a short trip to the Intuit Dome to face the Clippers (1-2) on Wednesday in the second half of the back-to-back.

A perfect opportunity for the Lakers to right their wrongs.
