The Lakers were without Luka Doncic in the second half of their back-to-back on Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Lakers handily took down the Los Angeles Clippers, 103-87, at Intuit Dome Wednesday night, receiving important contributions from virtually their entire rotation.
The Lakers were without the NBA's scoring leader, Luka Doncic, in the second half of their back-to-back, but they were able to bounce back following their first loss of the season to the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.
Head coach JJ Redick called the 136-129 defeat to the Blazers "a track meet" and was pleased with the way his team settled into the game on both sides of the floor against the Clippers.
Strength In Numbers
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesThe Lakers needed a little something from everybody to beat their crosstown rivals, and their depth delivered.
Quentin Grimes got the spot start in Doncic's place and fittingly led the team — and the game — in scoring with 23 points. Collin Sexton turned in his best performance of the season, posting 21 points (6-for-11 FG, 4-for-7 3PT) in 21 minutes off the bench.
Sandro Mamukelashvili filled the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.
Jarred Vanderbilt notched the second-highest plus-minus (+22) in his season debut despite not scoring a point, underlining his defensive impact in 21 second-unit minutes.
"I thought we did it on the defensive end, and the guys like Vando, Sexton, and Mamu; you can't always read into a single game's plus-minus, but theirs was very apparent in our good stretches," Redick said. "Just the impact those guys had... They were great, and they helped us win."
Amongst other starters, Austin Reaves continued to struggle with turnovers (8; 1 assist), but chipped in 16 points and six rebounds. Matisse Thybulle (15) and Walker Kessler (11) combined for 26 points.
Defense First
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn ImagesIt only made sense for the Lakers to lean on their defense in the absence of their most prolific scorer. And they did.
They held the Clippers to just 35 percent shooting from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc. They corralled a season-high 48 rebounds and snatched 15 steals, scoring 31 points off 24 Clippers turnovers.
The Lakers also led 24-6 in fast-break points and had a 48-28 edge in paint points.
Grimes, Thybulle, Kessler, and Jake LaRavia anchored the starters defensively. Grimes had four steals, while Thybulle and Kessler added two steals and a block apiece. LaRavia made his presence felt with three steals and two blocks, drawing praise from Redick for his impact on that end.
The Lakers improved to 4-1 with the win and will now head to Golden State to take on the Warriors (2-3) on Friday, with Doncic and Ziaire Williams expected to return.
The Clippers (1-3) were without former Laker Rui Hachimura (quadriceps) but saw a positive outing from rookie Keaton Wagler, who dropped a career-high 21 points off the bench.
