What would the Los Angeles Lakers have to give up for Jonathan Kuminga?

The Los Angeles Lakers are still searching for ways to find gaps in their roster, even after making wholesale changes where just about everyone not named Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are now out.

LeBron James remains an unrestricted free agent, Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard, Rui Hachimura signed elsewhere as free agents, and Deandre Ayton was traded.

The team brought in Walker Kessler, giving up two first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps to the Utah Jazz before signing the restricted free agent. They also signed free agents Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, and Kevon Looney while trading for Jaden Hardy.

Are The Lakers Done Adding?

According to multiple reports, the Lakers have an interest in free agent Jonathan Kuminga, who last played for the Atlanta Hawks.

According to Kohbi Price of the New York Post, the Lakers and Hawks could work out a sign-and-trade that sees the Lakers trade Jarred Vanderbilt and a 2032 first-round pick swap for Kuminga.

Kuminga started last season with the Golden State Warriors before being traded at the deadline to the Hawks. In 36 total games, he averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.

In six playoff games with the Hawks, he averaged 13.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and one assist.

Kuminga is a great athlete who gets to the rim and has shown he can play strong on-ball defense. He's not much of a floor spacer, shooting just 33% on fewer than three attempts per game from deep last season. There have also been questions about his consistency and commitment as he found himself in and out of the lineup with the Warriors.

The Hawks declined his team option that would've paid him $24.3 million this upcoming season, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Should The Lakers Do It?

The Lakers can sign Kuminga outright as he is an unrestricted free agent, but they only have $9.3 million in their room space exception to offer. If Kuminga wants more, a sign-and-trade is beneficial for him.

Vanderbilt is making $12 million this upcoming season, which would be the range that Kuminga should expect if there is going to be a sign-and-trade, unless the Lakers also want to involve Dalton Knecht, who is making $4.2 million.

Giving up their last tradeable first-round pick in 2032, even if it is just a swap, probably scares the Lakers after they just gave up two firsts and two swaps for Kessler. Trading all your first-round picks in one offseason is risky business.

If Kuminga really wants to be a Laker, taking the exception money would be best for all parties.
