LA came up short in the final seconds against the top-seeded Pistons.

The Los Angeles Lakers came into Detroit riding one of the best stretches of basketball they've played all season, and they left with their nine-game winning streak in the rearview mirror. Detroit's Daniss Jenkins had the game of his life at exactly the wrong time for LA.

Jenkins finished with a career-high 30 points, but it was his six points in the final 34 seconds that did the Lakers in. Los Angeles had clawed back from 16 down in the third quarter to actually take a 108-107 lead late, which made the collapse feel that much more painful. They were right there, and Jenkins took it away from them.

Luka Doncic led the way with 32 points in his return after the NBA rescinded his would-be suspension, and Austin Reaves added 24. LeBron James was quiet in the first half but finished with 12 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. The pieces were there for LA to escape Detroit with the win intact.

This was an especially frustrating result considering Cade Cunningham was still out of the lineup for the Pistons. And yet, the Lakers couldn't keep Detroit away from the rim consistently enough when it mattered most, and that's ultimately what cost them.

Jenkins Was the Difference

After Deandre Ayton's two free throws gave the Lakers a 108-107 lead with 39.9 seconds left, it looked like LA might pull it off. Jenkins answered immediately with two free throws to flip it back. Then Reaves hit a tough jumper in the lane to make it 110-109 with 29.7 seconds remaining, and it felt like the Lakers might have it in the bag.

Jenkins had other ideas. He scored again, then iced it with two more free throws after Doncic missed, making it 113-110 with nine seconds left. Doncic's contested three at the buzzer never had a chance. That sequence is going to hurt for a while.

The Lakers had actually built some real momentum in the fourth, capping a comeback that started when they tied it at 91 with nine minutes to go. They went ahead, then watched Detroit rattle off a 10-3 run to go up 101-94. LA kept fighting back and eventually took the lead late, but couldn't finish it.

What's Next for the Lakers

A loss like this one is frustrating but it doesn't erase what the Lakers built during that nine-game run. Streaks end eventually and the way LA competed in Detroit, coming back from 16 down to take a late lead, says something about the character of this group.

The Lakers visit the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday and will have a quick turnaround to respond. How they bounce back from a gut punch like this one will be telling about where they are as a team heading into the final stretch of the season.

Doncic, Reaves and LeBron all showed up. The Lakers just ran into a kid having the night of his life at the worst possible moment, and sometimes that's just how it goes.
