The Los Angeles Lakers escaped Orlando with a thrilling 105-104 victory over the Magic on Saturday night, but the biggest story coming out of the game had nothing to do with the final score.

Luka Doncic picked up his 16th technical foul of the season after a heated exchange with Orlando center Goga Bitadze, putting him on the verge of an automatic one-game suspension.

On Sunday afternoon, however, the NBA announced it had rescinded the technical fouls on both players after a league office review.

What Redick Had to Say

After the game, head coach JJ Redick spoke to reporters and immediately addressed the situation surrounding the technical and what led to it.

"We'll obviously try to get that rescinded," Redick said. "There were certain things said in a language that the referees couldn't understand in reference to Luka's mom."

The incident happened with about a minute left in the third quarter when Doncic and Bitadze started jawing at each other during a free throw and kept going as they ran down the floor.

The officials hit both players with a double technical. For Bitadze it was just another foul, but for Doncic, who is averaging 33.4 points, 8.4 assists, and 7.9 rebounds this season, it triggered the automatic one-game suspension that comes with reaching 16 technicals.

Doncic was honest about his frustration after the game, saying he let his teammates down but felt he had to stand up for himself after what Bitadze allegedly said in Serbian about his family.

Bitadze offered a different version, saying Doncic was the one who brought families into it first.

Regardless, the Lakers wasted no time filing an appeal, and it paid off.

The Bigger Picture for the Lakers

With the technical rescinded, Doncic drops back down to 15 on the season and will be available for Monday's game against the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons.

It is the third time in his career that the league has pulled back a 16th technical, keeping his streak of never serving a tech-related suspension alive.

The Lakers have won nine straight and improved to 46-25, holding down the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with 12 games left.

The Magic fell to 38-32 and have now dropped four straight.

Even with the drama surrounding the technical, Doncic still turned in a strong performance against Orlando with 33 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and four steals.

He shot just 12-of-30 from the field and struggled from deep in the second half, but his ability to get to the line and create for others kept the Lakers alive.

It was Luke Kennard who bailed them out with a game-winning three-pointer with 0.6 seconds left.

What Comes Next

Even though the tech was rescinded, the situation is still a warning sign for the Lakers moving forward.

Doncic now sits at 15 technicals with 12 games to go, and if he picks up just one more, the next one will trigger the suspension all over again.

Every two technicals after the 16th also results in another one-game ban, so there is very little margin for error down the stretch for a team riding one of the hottest stretches in the league and gearing up for a deep playoff run.

The good news is that the technical foul count resets once the postseason begins, though the suspension trigger drops to seven in the playoffs.

Getting this one overturned was a relief, but Doncic and the coaching staff know they can't keep walking this line.
