Could the Los Angeles Lakers bring in Jonathan Kuminga?
The Los Angeles Lakers continue to overhaul their roster in the offseason, bringing in three new starters and almost an entirely new bench.
Gone are LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton, Luke Kennard, and Rui Hachimura, which was the starting lineup for the Lakers in the first five games of the playoffs against the Houston Rockets, and the starting lineup that went up 3-0 in the series.
The Lakers have brought in Sandro Mamukelashvili, Walker Kessler, Quintin Grimes, Collin Sexton, and Kevon Looney, who they deem to be better fits around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
While they have added better complementary pieces and depth, there are still holes in the roster.
Is Jonathan Kuminga An Option?
According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, the Lakers are in active pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga, but not yet made an enticing enough offer for him to commit.
Kuminga spent last season with the Golden State Warriors before he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks at the trade deadline.
In 36 total games, he averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in the regular season. He shot 46% from the field and 33% from three.
In six playoff games with the Hawks, he averaged 13.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and one assist while shooting 48% from the field but only 20% from three.
Kuminga became a polarizing figure during his time with the Warriors as he wanted more playing time and opportunity, but his role constantly shifted, he lacked consistency, and head coach Steve Kerr seemed to lose faith in him over the years.
Is Jonathan Kuminga A Good Fit?
The Lakers need a wing defender, and Kuminga fits the bill there as he is a rangy defender with speed and size. He's a career 33% shooter from three, so there might be some spacing issues next to Doncic and Reaves.
Kuminga's talent has never been in question, but his willingness to accept his role has come under fire.
The Warriors were a better team with Kuminga off the floor than they were with him on the floor. He had a negative net rating next to Steph Curry, which is a red flag. He was much better in Atlanta during the regular season, but like everyone in Atlanta, struggled in the playoffs.
Kuminga's role in Los Angeles would look more similar to the one he had in Golden State than Atlanta, a team without a true creator or offensive engine, which allowed Kuminga to play more freely. The Warriors have Curry, the Lakers have Luka.
If he's able to accept his role next to Luka and Reaves, it could work for the Lakers. If he
