This offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the most active teams during the free agency period, and they added various new faces to play around Luka Doncic. Los Angeles added the likes of center Walker Kessler and guard Collin Sexton, but they made one move that many could be overlooking. 

The Lakers signed guard Quentin Grimes from the Philadelphia 76ers to a four-year, $60 million deal. Grimes has been a very reliable piece on both ends of the floor for several seasons. Prior to his time in Philadelphia, he spent time with the Dallas Mavericks. 

The Mavericks were a team that did not see much winning during Grimes' stint, but he was quietly productive and became sought after by contending teams. After signing a bigger contract with the Lakers, he could be in a position to show the rest of the NBA his true worth. 

After losing a player like Rui Hachimura, someone who shot over 40 percent from three-point range in 2025-2026, the Lakers were in need of someone who could fill that void. While Quentin Grimes shot just 33.4 percent from deep during the regular season last year, he shot 40 percent during the postseason. 

What makes Grimes valuable to this Lakers roster is the fact that he's another player on this roster who can create for himself offensively. Grimes can be a reliable spot-up shooter, but the Lakers could use a player who can handle the ball off the bench. 

Los Angeles has been known to be a team that likes to shoot the ball from the perimeter, and having Grimes as a regular player in the rotation gives them another option on offense. 

In terms of how he fits with Luka Doncic, Grimes is the kind of player who fits around a player like Doncic. If he can continue to be someone who can hold his own on defense, he will fit right into this Lakers rotation. 

Grimes is coming off a season in which he averaged 13.4 points per game, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. The Lakers will need that kind of production off the bench regularly, and with the addition of guard Collin Sexton this offseason, they could be set up for success because of their depth. 

The Lakers struggled towards the end of the season because of their depth issues, but they'll hope that the addition of Quentin Grimes and others will prevent issues like that moving forward.
