Austin Reaves pointed to execution and communication after the Lakers surrendered 136 points, with a Clippers rematch offering an immediate response.
The Los Angeles Lakers scored enough to keep their unbeaten start alive Tuesday. Austin Reaves saw the problem on the other end.
Following a 136-129 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers at Crypto.com Arena, Reaves pointed to defensive execution as an area demanding improvement. The defeat dropped L.A. to 3-1 ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with the Clippers, leaving little time between identifying the mistakes and trying to correct them.
“Game plan discipline wasn’t great,” Reaves said in his postgame interview with Spectrum SportsNet.
His assessment centered on communication and carrying out the team’s coverages, rather than treating Portland’s offensive success as something the Lakers could simply dismiss.
Reaves Puts Execution at the Center of the Problem
Reaves said the Lakers needed to communicate more effectively and execute their basic defensive responsibilities more consistently. He also acknowledged his own mistakes, describing the breakdowns as a collective issue rather than assigning responsibility to one teammate.
That distinction matters for a team still building its defensive habits early in the season. Changing a coverage offers limited value if the players do not carry out the original assignment together. A possession can unravel when one defender expects help that never arrives or when teammates react differently to the same action.
For L.A., the next step is making those responsibilities clear before an opponent creates the advantage. Communication has to reach the player defending the ball, the teammate providing help and the defender responsible for recovering outside.

Accountability becomes easier to act on when it starts with the players responsible for setting the standard, especially after a game in which the offense still produced 129 points.
Clippers Rematch Offers an Immediate Test
The schedule gives the Lakers a quick opportunity to show a response. Wednesday’s game at Intuit Dome is the second night of a back-to-back, turning the defensive corrections into a test of concentration as well as execution.
There is limited time for extensive practice between games. That puts greater importance on film review, direct communication and recognizing the same situations when they appear again.
The standard should be more specific than simply allowing fewer points. The Lakers need possessions in which the initial defender and the help behind him operate together, without creating an unnecessary opening elsewhere on the floor.

The more concerning possessions are those in which a missed responsibility creates an easy opportunity before the defense has made the offense work.
One loss does not settle what the Lakers will become defensively. It does, however, give them a clear issue to address while their season is still taking shape.
Reaves identified the starting point. Against the Clippers, L.A. gets its first chance to show that the conversation produced a more connected defensive effort.
